30-minute outpatient procedure
clears up nasal obstruction.
Nasal obstruction is a physical blockage of the air passageways
of your nose. Temporary blockage occurs when you're suffering a
cold or allergy, which is normal. However if your obstruction is
more than just a passing occurrence, you might suffer from a deviated
septum.
Symptoms of a deviated septum include an airflow blockage through
one nostril, difficulty sleeping, chronic nasal stuffiness and loud
breathing or snoring. In most cases, a deviated septum is caused
by a broken or injured nose, but it can also be present at birth.
If you or a family member suffers from any of the symptoms listed
above, look to Dr. Thomas M. Crews at Statesboro ENT and Hearing
Clinic. He will examine your nose to pinpoint the cause of obstruction
and will ask questions regarding possible injury, allergies as well
as your use of nasal sprays. If Dr. Crews finds that you have a
deviated septum, he can correct it with a 30-minute outpatient procedure
called septoplasty, which involves the realignment of the septum.
"It's amazing how many patients come in thinking that they
suffer from a sinus disease or a sleeping disorder, when they actually
have a mechanically obstructed nose," says Dr. Crews, adding,
"The nose is the most commonly broken bone in the body, and
it often heals crookedly, causing a septal deviation." What's
more, says Dr. Crews, "Effective nasal airway breathing is
important to proper pulmonary function and good health. It allows
air to be cleaned, humidified and filtered before it reaches the
lungs."
Dr. Crews is board-certified in otolaryngology/head and neck surgery
and has successfully performed thousands of septoplasty procedures.
